Get Back To Getting Wet

Ocean First   Jun 30, 2022

2020 was a tough year for divers near and far. Divelust became stronger than ever, with a growing desire to breathe humid air and feel the saltwater on our skin. We've finally made it to 2021 and there is a shining light for scuba diving and travel once again. Whether it's been 6 months or 6 years, we have some tips to share that will help you reintroduce yourself to get back to getting wet!

Scuba Skills Update

Our Scuba Skills Update, or SSU, course is a great tool to feel comfortable once again! This refresher course consists of two parts - a knowledge review and an in-pool skills review. This course is meant to keep divers' skills sharp. Refreshing your dive knowledge and skills is important to create and maintain a culture of dive safety. Some dive operators actually require an SSU before getting back in the water if you haven't been diving within the last year. We run group SSU's twice a month or they can be booked on a private basis, see our website for more details.

Continuing Education & Ecology Courses

If you're not quite ready to book your next trip but want to continue learning we have a plethora of courses at your disposal! Keeping your skills up to date as mentioned is imperative to dive safety and is necessary after taking time off. If you do have a trip on the horizon, specialty diving courses may be necessary for upcoming trips. Do you have particular interest or fear in an ocean creature? Our ecology courses are virtually offered once a month to help you expand your knowledge on manta rays, sea turtles, sharks and many more. We firmly believe knowledge is power and crafts all around safer divers. View our upcoming calendar of specialty and ecology courses.

Service Your Gear

Servicing your gear is just as important as making sure your skills are up to date. Maintaining your gear can deter from dive incidents caused by inadequate equipment. Annual inspections are important for keeping your equipment in tip top shape. Even if you had your gear checked at it's last annual inspection date, it is a good idea to have it looked at to make sure all systems are a go. Our Club Aquarius members have access to free inspections and discounts on labor rate per stage. :Reduce your wait time by bringing in your gear now so it will be ready when you are ready to travel." - Matt Carr

Pool Time

While you may not be able to get into the open ocean soon, remember that we have a wonderful pool that you are able to jump into! If you want to practice any skills, get familiar with your gear again, or just get a feel for being back underwater, contact the shop to set up a time to use our private, in-house 89°F pool. While it has been a challenging time, and we aren't quite out of the woods yet, there are incredible amounts of hope for the future! The best way to prepare yourself for your next underwater adventure is to keep your skills, gear, and yourself fresh so you can jump in at the next chance for adventure.
